Three Instincts, 9 Passions, and 27 Personalities: Clarifying the Transformative Power of the Enneagram’s Subtypes

When are you driven by your animal drives vs. your emotional passion vs. both at the same time?

Wisdom tradition tells us real inner growth involves becoming aware of our animal nature and using the capacity for conscious reflection (we as humans uniquely have) to observe ourselves. In doing this, we aim to develop a mature balance between releasing and taming the animal within and increase our capacity to observe our passions in action. Both are central competencies for committed Enneagram students.

The 3 instincts and the 27 subtypes described by the Enneagram model provide important information about our most unconscious behavior that can usefully guide this kind of self-work that is the basis of real change.

And yet, these elements of the system have been a source of much confusion among even the most experienced Enneagram students. Different schools and teachers have different approaches and use different language to communicate these important key pieces of Enneagram theory.

In this day-long program, Beatrice Chestnut and Uranio Paes will provide much-needed clarity about the specific nature of the three instinctual drives—and the 27 subtype personalities that result when each of the 9 types breaks down into three distinct versions based on which of the three instincts dominates a person’s experience. They will also discuss the six “instinctual sequences,”—and what it means when a particular instinct is “dominant” or “repressed.”

Drawing on insights from seminal Enneagram author Claudio Naranjo’s latest expression of the subtypes and Gurdjieffian descriptions of the instincts and centers of intelligence, Beatrice and Uranio will guide participants in an enlightening exploration of the specific ways our instinctual impulses combine with our emotional passions to drive our most automatic and least conscious subtype-based behavior.

They will help participants gain a deep understanding of the psychological, social, historical, and biological dimensions of the instincts, and the ways in which a thorough understanding of the 27 subtypes helps improve typing, highlights the nuanced variations among people of the same type, and provides 27 distinct growth paths toward healthier functioning.

About Beatrice Chestnut

Don’t know Beatrice yet? Beatrice Chestnut is one of the most authoritative thought leaders in the modern Enneagram movement. Beatrice Chestnut has been working on the Enneagram for 27 years. She wrote two books: The Complete Enneagram: 27 Paths to Greater Self-Awareness and The 9 Types of Leadership: Mastering the Art of People in the 21st-Century Workplace. She also compiled the popular booklet The Enneagram System’s 27 Personality Subtypes. This booklet is a brief summary of Claudio Naranjo's important sub-type teachings, which she extends to a larger Enneagram Subtypes handbook that will be published in 2018.

Subtypes?

Do you wonder, what are the subtypes exactly? The enneagram describes 3 centers of human intelligence - the head, the heart and the body - and the enneagram also describes 9 interconnected personality types. Each personality type has 3 subtype versions based on whether someone has a predominant drive to self-preservation, social interaction in groups or one-to-one bonding. That means that there are a total of 27 subtypes. Each subtype has its own characteristic behavioral patterns. Learning your own subtype and thus getting to know your own patterns can help you with your personal and inner growth. Or as Beatrice puts it herself: "I believe these subtype descriptions offer an even more nuanced view of the possible manifestations of the human personality, shedding light on our most automatic functioning so we can become more self- aware."
