    Introduction & Opening

We kick-off the conference with a warm welcoming introduction and opening by Curt Micka, Chairman IEA Global and Chairman of IEA Netherlands, Albert Kamphuis.

  3. From 9:45 to 11:45

    Keynote Russ Hudson

    By Hudson, Russ

While the Enneagram is known by many as a typology, it is understood by more experienced students as a system for development. But what exactly are we developing? We learn about terms such as "Essence" and "Personality," but what, exactly, do these words refer to? What is development from the point of view of the traditions behind the Enneagram typology? As it turns out, in the traditional views of the system, inner work involves development of several aspects of our human nature, but it is important to know which elements we are working with. Misunderstandings in this are common, but can truly derail the usefulness of the system.

In this talk, Russ will explore with participants the sense and meaning of development, both of the personality and of the Essence, and illuminate ways that the typology facilitates this process. The session will include experiential exercises, music, and question and answer.

  4. From 14:00 to 15:30

Soul Searching | Experiencing Pain, Suffering, Fear & Immobility and Our ‘True’ Self

    By Whillans, Penny

This workshop introduces the practice of three-centred awareness plus One-Pointed awareness, developed in my capacity as a psychologist, working with people who are suffering pain, horror, fear and who experience themselves as being ‘stuck,’ or trapped. This practice allows for awareness of Being to arise and guide us beyond the fixations of personality and the driving forces of our instincts. It provides space for the guiding wisdom of our three centres of intelligence and support of our ‘True Self’ within the pain and suffering of being human. An Enneagram-related theory of pain, suffering and resistance will be reviewed in terms of the Enneagram as a map. Participants will be asked, in confidence, to identify and briefly explore a current personal experience of pain, fear, suffering, or a ‘stuck place.’ They will be led through a cumulative exercise to experience the intelligence/ wisdom of their three centres plus “One-Pointed” awareness. An experiential review will follow accompanied with a re-exploration of their identified pain, fear or resistances. Discussion follows. (This workshop is targeted for Enneagram professionals and those working in therapy, counseling and coaching.)

  5. From 14:00 to 15:30

Soul Searching | Opening to Your True Self: Getting Your Inner Critic Out of the Way

    By Roberts, Lynda, Naylor, Michael

We all have an inner critic operating in clandestine ways to keep us locked in patterns of personality that prevent us from opening to our True Nature. In this session, we will work with our inner critic using a Law-of-Three-based model that can help us lessen our inner critic blockages. By seeing and understanding the dynamics that occur between two aspects of ourselves, our inner judge and our criticized child, we discover that we naturally open to the third aspect of ourselves, our inner adult, our True Self. Using the Law-of-Three-based model, exercises, and discussion, we will each explore our own unique inner critic dynamics as well as explore with others Enneagram type-specific dynamics. Shining the light of awareness on inner critic dynamics that take place within us is a powerful and effective method for breaking down the barriers that our inner critic patterns create, thus allowing us to open to the wisdom of our True Self.

  6. From 14:00 to 15:30

Soul Searching | Deconstructing Egofixations beyond the own Type for the wisdom of the True self to manifest

    By Trucco, Viviana

Perhaps working only on Type Egofixations we are limiting our seeking. What if we discover we have to explore other shadows than the fixation corresponding only to our Type? When we understand the multidimensional System the Enneagram is, we can trace richer paths of transformation to allow True Self to manifest. In this session we will explore 4 dimensions of personality and discover what potential Egofixations could have settled down in our personality according to our balanced or unbalanced energy flows (Naranjo´s Polarities), or according to how structural layers of personality have decanted (Naranjo’s Symmetries); according also to our orientation to object relations and according to the interference of the early emotional charge (Triads). We will explore these potential Egofixations and its Antidotes to facilitate transformation toward True Self. Participants will receive handouts to work within groups through interactive conversations. They will be able to find out which potential Egofixations they share with other Types. Participants who would like to explore more thoroughly the present resources or potential fixations of their personality will be encouraged to take previously an online assessment and receive the results to work with during the session by contacting Viviana Trucco to receive the password.

  7. From 14:00 to 15:30

Soul Searching | Enneagram & the Play of Life® - Finding my True Self through Knowing & Accepting my False Self

    By Raimundo, Melanie

In this workshop, participants will learn an immediately applicable technique aimed at deepening the reflective power of the Enneagram by using a 3-dimensional method called the Play of Life® to activate untapped parts of the brain. This process enhances insight and consciousness on our False Self by bypassing cognitive biases and defence mechanisms, and enabling visualisation of our desired True Self. The Play of Life® allows theTrue and False Self to literally be depicted in front of us, using small figures on a stage. With this insight, the seeker discovers the First Step towards nurturing and enjoying their aspired True self. The Play of Life® method is founded on contemporary neuroscience integrated to the Enneagram and other self reflective and communicational models including, Psychodrama, Logotherapy and Spirituality. These techniques will give Enneagram beginners, enthusiasts and professionals a novel and creative way to guide “searchers” to an even deeper level of consciousness. It’s a gentle tool that starts the journey of self-discovery for those who “avoid, are fearful or don’t know how to” face their False Self, their shadow, their fears. The method has direct applications to Enneagram practice, teaching, coaching, counselling, psychotherapy spirituality, and corporate individual and team coaching.

  8. From 16:00 to 17:30

Soul Connecting | Enneagram Comedy styles

    By Searle, Judith

What tickles your funny bone? Laughter is universal, yet the type of comedy that triggers this gut reaction in each of us has clear connections to the things we habitually pay close attention to. At previous IEA Conference Judith has discussed the relations between various story genres (e.g., fantasy, melodrama, the thriller, the western) and specific Enneagram points. For this 2018 Conference, she will discuss nine distinct styles of comedy and their relation to each of the Enneagram types. Some of these connections will already be familiar to students of the Enneagram: the relation of Romantic Comedy to Type Two, and of Black Comedy to Type Five (for example, in films by Stanley Kubrick). To illustrate her points, Judith will show film examples related to each of the Enneagram types. She will also offer experiential exercises in small groups to help attendees explore the comedic aspects of their own type. Come join in the fun!

  9. From 16:00 to 17:30

Soul Connecting | (Re)Writing Your Enneagram Journey

    By Bell, Melanie

We all have stories about who we are, shaped by our personality and experiences. These narratives are important because they influence our behavior and define the limits of what we can do. In order to make sense of our life, we tell ourselves a story about it, and our life falls in line with our story. Let’s identify the story we’ve been living and explore ways of creatively rewriting it in order to uncover new possibilities for ourselves. We’ll begin by unearthing our personal narratives through writing and discussion. We’ll delve into our sense of self, obstacles we’ve faced, and ways our stories have helped us. We’ll also learn the archetypal growth journeys of the nine Enneagram types. Each type follows a distinctive “hero’s journey” pattern with a protagonist, obstacles, and a path toward expansion. Drawing inspiration from our type’s journey of growth, we’ll use storytelling prompts to move beyond our limiting narratives and write a new journey for ourselves. Who could you be if you were more than a character in your life story? What could a happy outcome for you look like? Bring your writing materials to this creative sharing session and find out!

  10. From 16:00 to 17:30

Soul Connecting | The Ordinary Hero within the Living System

    By Adelfang, Monika, Kamphuis, Albert

It is often said that ‘the wisdom of the Enneagram finds you and meets you where you are at.’ As you grow with it, it keeps evolving and meeting you again and again. Playfully and in contemplative ways participants are invited to experience the Enneagram as a dynamic holding environment of universal principles, processes and natural phenomena.

Life’s circumstances have helped us grow into adulthood and live our lives but it has also blindfolded us in becoming very selective in our response to reality. Our ego and personality took many years to develop and hard wire itself in our physiology, thinking and feeling patterns.  We see the ego as our adaptive self that has looked after us to protect us. We call it unconditional love that has taken care of us.

We know, deep down, that we are all connected and that reality is waiting to support us when our TRUE SELF comes forward. As we begin to recognize our True Self, we begin to experience how interrelated our inner work is with our capacity to respond to the realities of life. We call this the Living System.

Becoming aware of the living system can begin with the Ordinary Hero’s practice of ‘allowing’. This develops as an open receptivity.
We wish to support your capacity for ‘allowing’ with a particular exercise we call the Ego-Essence Negotiation. This exercise can support you personally and in your work with others. This helps you develop what we call ‘egowise’ behaviour.

By doing this workshop we also briefly introduce content from our Enneagram related book ‘The Courageous Humanity Field Guide ’in progress.

    The session setup includes:

    • A definition of the Living System and Egowise behaviour
    • The Circle of Being within the Living System
    • The Ego-Essence Negotiation exercise in plenary format
    • An introduction to our Enneagram based Field Guide for individuals, groups and organizational communities

  11. From 16:00 to 17:30

Soul Connecting | Mindfulness Tips for each Enneagram Type

    By Oelofsen, Casper

Performance, awareness, and quality thinking happens in the present moment, in the “now”. However, we are constantly distracted from the now into the future, past and other common external stressors. In the midst of such consistent disorder and disarray, the normal human reaction is to feel anxious, insecure and being out of control. The human instinct is to fight “it”, to overcome the disturbance or flee “it”, to hide from what disturbs. This instinct is propelled by powerful physiological processes where adrenaline and cortisol drive fighting, fleeing or freezing, whether we are consciously aware of this or not. It’s our new normal. We need new skills, attitudes and ways of relating to change and uncertainty. An ability and capacity to be grounded, steadfast and present regardless of the constant reshaping of the context. The presentation draws on personal experience, teaching mindfulness based applications to executives in the corporate environment. The aim of the presentation is to give participants insights on how to assist their clients to be more mindful (in the moment). This session explores the “how to practice mindfulness” for different Enneagram types. Types have different hurdles, unique built in momentum and specific wins when they practice Mindfulness.

  12. From 10:00 to 11:45

Keynote Beatrice Chestnut & Uranio Paes - On the Journey Home to the True Self: Big Ideas from Literature, Psychology, and the Enneagram

    By Chestnut, Beatrice, Paes, Uranio

As a growth tool, the Enneagram of Personality provides a map of the human journey that leads from unconscious habit through a gradual process of self-liberation to a remembrance of the true, or higher, self. By exploring the metaphor of “the journey” in great works of literature and psychology, we will gain a deeper appreciation of how the Enneagram serves as a symbol of a pathway to higher consciousness. We will look to some of the big universal ideas behind epic stories and foundational theories of human growth to find inspiration—inspirational insights that can propel us on our own journeys and further our collective evolution as a human community.

  13. From 14:00 to 15:30

Soul Experiencing | Who’s the Me I Want to Be? Body Wisdom as a Guide to Your True Self

    By Isaacs, Andrea

It’s easy to be peaceful and connected to your true self when you’re meditating alone on a mountaintop. The question really is, who are you being when someone pushes your buttons? How do you react when you’re confronted with challenging people and life circumstances? Pose this question to yourself: “Who’s the me I want to be, especially when I’m challenged?” My answer guides me in living life as closely connected to my true self as consistently as possible. How do you do that? Let your body’s wisdom guide you. When challenged, learn how to respond in a way that honors and reflects your true self, honors and respects the true self of all involved, with the best possible outcome in mind. Somatic Focusing (SF) is a premiere methodology for cultivation of the true self. Based on the neuroscience of change, this experiential approach creates healthy and clean communication, trust, alignment and integrity. SF incorporates simple body movements that create a deeper and increased emotional range of options available so you can respond in a way that would have previously been inaccessible. You will find new ease with challenging people and situations, greater success, long-term happiness and living more consistently connected to your true self.

  14. From 14:00 to 15:30

Soul Experiencing | Braiding the centres - accessing wisdom

    By Brown, Heather, Cowan, Rosemary

We know that the Holy Ideas and Virtues cannot be practised – we need to open our heart in order to receive them. We find this challenging because our type mechanism has become anchored in our body. The Path to Integration described by Terry Saracino shows how accessing all our centres of intelligence together can help us come fully into the present moment and become more receptive. This can open up our way forward much more effectively than focusing on one centre alone. This highly practical workshop integrates bodywork and receptivity practices to help us access the wisdom of our true self. It includes a first aid kit to help us stay present to our deepest and most challenging emotions and abreactions, so that we can experience receptivity with equanimity and joy. We will use attention practices with acupressure and grounding techniques based on Chinese medicine practices. We will then integrate the bodywork into heart-based receptive practices such as Chanting, Mindfulness and Loving Kindness meditation. Participants will leave with plenty of practical ideas that they can adapt to their own practice.

  15. From 14:00 to 15:30

Soul Experiencing | Using Your Breath to Unlock the Power of the Enneagram

    By Roulo, Lynn

Using simple yet powerful breath work techniques, this session unlocks the power of the Enneagram through your breath. Each of the nine Enneagram types is mapped to specific Kundalini Yoga breath work meditation to help relax the habit of attention while simultaneously building the nervous system. This approachable, interactive session gives a high level overview of each Enneagram type and then together we practice the breath work meditation appropriate for each habit of fixation. Expect to have fun. Based on her book “Headstart for Happiness: A Guide Book Using Kundalini Yoga and the Enneagram” Lynn Roulo gives practical tips on how to use these methods to initiate change in your life. Kundalini Yoga, often referred to as the yoga of awareness, is a technology of energy and energy management. Unlike many forms of yoga, Kundalini Yoga places a large emphasis on the breath and the development of the nervous system. This session is appropriate for everyone—absolute beginners to seasoned Enneagram experts, people who have never done yoga or breath work to yoga masters.

  16. From 14:00 to 15:30

Soul Experiencing | Voice and Enneagram - Listen to the Wisdom of Your True Self for Spiritual Growth

    By Zhai, Cynthia

The human voice is the organ of the soul,"" said Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Our voice is not just a tool to convey information. It reflects everything about you, your past, present and potential. Listen to your voice and you'll hear the wisdom deep within you, showing you the pathway to remove the blockages, heal your wounds and become your true self. Most people have overlooked or are ignorant of the critical role our voices play in day-to-day conversations. Neither have they paid much attention to the defining role our voices play in personal, professional and spiritual growth. Everyone has a true voice inside. It has been covered by the dusts of physical, mental, emotional blockages that are results of the earthly mattes we have to experience as human beings on this physical planet. Uncovering that true voice is to remove the blockages, release the resistance and heal the wounds. It is the pathway to uncover the true self.

  17. From 16:00 to 17:30

Soul Acting | Holy Ideas and its mimic

    By Gilbert, Marion

How do we learn to hide our essential nature from a three centered perspective? In this workshop we will explore the necessity of the descent and to say yes to the unpopular proposition to begin to turn towards what is painful with skillful means, deepening understanding and compassion for our human predicament. How do we return to our true selves and use the map of the Enneagram to aide us in this journey of self discovery and notice how we bypass who we truly were meant to be in three different ways? In this presentation we will focus on the movement around the circle, while the witnessing the movements along the lines within circle, accessing the wings and the underlying driving force of the instincts and the subtype behaviors will be mentioned and touched upon as they arise.

Through 6 sessions this program gently guides the client in a structured frame based on their basic type. This program, I’ve called “Liberate your Type”. By working with the challenges and resources described in the Enneagram theory, you will help your client gain profound understanding, insights and awareness of the patterns and potential of their type. The program offers an easy to apply approach as well as being structured and hands on. It calls for an active engagement from the coachee through homework assignments between sessions. Soul Acting | The Glass Slipper: Using the Enneagram to Free the Feminine Voice

    By Herrick, Susie

The depth of disregard for women has been recently illuminated in even the most liberal minded corners of our culture. What is this split in consciousness from the feminine and why must we mend it? One of the ways we as children are taught to deal with the instinctual mind is through the fairytale story. By observing these characters, we learn to model our own life skills and build our personality traits. Using Cinderella, Susie engages the audience to learn how your story is your power. How Cinderella's personality traits and her stepfamily's exhibit the facets of Enneagram fixations and passions in order to keep at bay the characters' authentic reactions to their current predicaments as women, and how our types may encourage us to deny our expression of the feminine, offering specific ways to bring forth the feminine voice using the passion to virtue bridge in the Enneagram. Drawing upon her new book with Elle Luna, Your Story Is Your Power, Susie will use interactive exercises so participants can experience the damaging affects of bypassing the feminine in the human psyche and how to use the Enneagram to begin to cohere and heal this separated aspect of our minds.
